Gallants send AmaZulu crashing out of NBK Cup

Marumo Gallants advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup after edging AmaZulu 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Gallants made four changes from their defeat against the same opposition in the league, as Kamohelo Mahlatsi, Edgar Manaka, Sekela Sithole and Edson Khumalo were recalled.

AmaZulu, meanwhile, were unchanged from their win over Gallants in the league,as Elmo Kimbindu led the line, alongside Rowan Human, Hendrick Ekstein and Tshepang Moremi.

Gallants had a bright start as Kenny Nthatheni came close giving them an early lead with a header that was saved by goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

The hosts eventually went ahead on 18 minutes thanks to a shot by Junior Zindoga from a difficult angle against the run of play.

Dan Malesela's charges continued to stay on the front foot as on the half-hour mark Daniel Msendami also drew a save out of Ofori.

AmaZulu only started to threaten towards the half-time break but were not accurate in front of goal.

Usuthu came back guns blazing from the interval as Ekstein came close with a header that was smothered by shot-stopper Washington Arubi.

Arubi was kept busy, as on the hour-mark he produced acrobatics to keep out a shot from outside the box by Moremi.

Usuthu with 20 minutes remaining made an attacking change as Etiosa Ighodaro replaced Human, adding firepower upfront.

AmaZulu pressurized Gallants in the closing stages but they were not getting spaces in the good areas in the box.

Malesela's men were a threat on counter-attacks in the dying minutes as Ofori kept AmaZulu alive with a good save.

However, Siwelele Sa Marumo held on in the end and booked their spot in the quarter-finals.

Confirmed line-ups:

AmaZulu: Ofori, Jooste, Fielies, Mphahlele, Hanamub, Motshwari, Zungu, Ekstein, Moremi, Kambindu, Human

Subs: Mothwa, Gumede, Mthethwa, Ngobeni, Radebe, Ngema, Mbanjwa, Sithole, Ighodaro
