Rampant Galaxy smack seven past Vasco

TS Galaxy booked their spot in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 after trouncing Vasco Da Gama 7-0 on Wednesday evening.

Galaxy head coach Adnan Beganovic handed former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Keagan Dolly his first start among five changes, that also included goalkeeper Jiri Ciupa, Mpho Mvelase, Puso Dithejane and Sphesihle Maduna, from the 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows.

The Rockets had a dream start after Dzenan Zajmovic gave them the lead within the first three minutes with a strike in the box following a through ball by Sphiwe Mahlangu.

The hosts were 2-0 up two minutes later after  Zajmovic struck again in the box and completed his brace following his combination with Dithejane.

Galaxy remained on the front foot and Dolly made it 3-0 as he got his first goal with left-footed shot from the edge of the box that found the top corner.

The Rockets were running riot just after the half-hour mark after Marks Munyai made it 4-0 from a direct free-kick outside the box.

Galaxy slowed down the intensity of their attacks in the closing period of the first stanza, as they took a commanding 4-0 lead to the interval.

Dolly was among four changes by Galaxy at half-time, as they gave other players a run, with Damir Sovsic taking the place of the former Amakhosi star.

Vasco Da Gama had the fighting spirit to at least get on the scoresheet early in the second stanza but they were not troubling Ciupa in goal.

With 25 minutes to go, Zajmovic did not have the opportunity to complete his hat-trick, after he was replaced by Thokozani Sibanyoni up top.

Sibanyoni made it 5-0 for The Rockets in the last nine minutes with a close-range shot after he was teed up by Thamsanqa Masiya.

Vasco Da Gama threw in the towel in the dying minutes as Sibanyoni made it 6-0 for Galaxy and completed his brace after a through ball by Munyai.

Sovsic also got his name on the scoresheet for Beganovic's men with two minutes to go after he made it 7-0 with a strike in the box from a quick transition.

Galaxy booked their spot in the round of 16 and will come up against Durban City after a draw was conducted earlier in the evening.
