Pirates coach reveals relief of Gallants 'uncertainty'

Ahead of their crunch Nedbank Cup semi-final, Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has revealed what caught them off-guard in their earlier loss to Marumo Gallants.

Pirates slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Gallants in the league in March, and the shock result brings a certain ingredient to the the semi-final food to be served up by the two sides come Sunday at Orlando.

No prizes for guessing who the favourites are, but that loss serves as a reminder that the Soweto giants will have to earn their place to defend the cup.

Riveiro has suggested they were caught off-guard by the element of surprise from the Bloemfontein-based side, who had recently appointed Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new head coach, replacing Dan Malesela.

"It's not about getting lessons because I mean, we recently played against Marumo and it didn't go well for us. From there, we had the opportunity to continue analysing them - what are they looking for, what type of a team they want to be," Riveiro said in the pre-match press conference.

"When we played them, it was just two days with a new coach in charge. It was a little bit of uncertainty... what kind of team, what kind of game are we going to play there?

"So, the opportunity to learn and understand our opponent is something that is presented to us every week, not only in the game we played against them. So, we known them very well.

"Nowadays in football, there is no secrets. What the teams are capable to do, is about the way you want to approach the game on the day and we need to be ready for many different scenarios," he went on.

The last time the sides met in a knockout tournament, Gallants booted out Bucs out of the Nedbank Cup in the Last 16 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in extra-time three years ago, before Riveiro's arrival.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
