Once known as one of South African football's bad boys, Mokoena explains the origin of his nickname "Naughty By Nature"
What's your nickname?
"I have plenty of nicknames. In Durban, they call me Y2K, while the rest of the country used to call me Naughty By Nature."
Who gave it to you and why?
"Naughty By Nature was given to me by the fans. I remember I was still playing for Orlando Pirates. I couldn't fight it. I had to accept.
"They said it was because of my naughty nature. And remember, Naughty is also my real name. It's in my ID. It was originally my grandfather's name. The old man loved me so much we even share a name."
Did you like it?
"Yes, I did like it because it also represented my late grandfather; his name was Naughty.
"I believe my game lived up to my nickname; yes, everybody has his skeletons off the pitch; mine might have been being naughty, but no one can claim to be clean."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"I will keep Naughty By Nature. That is how people know me. I've gotten used to it.
