My Locker Room Secrets - Benedict Vilakazi

In this edition of My Locker Room Secrets, former Orlando Pirates midfield kingpin Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi reveals what used to take place in the club's dressing room.

Whose locker room are we in today?

"Benedict Vilakazi. A former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns central midfielder.

"Little Napoléon was also a Danish champion with Aalborg in the 2007/08 Season."

Reserves - Innocent Mayoyo, Oupa Mabuza, Sipho Sik

Who was always late?

"There was no one specific, to be honest. Sometimes it would be me and sometimes it would be Steve Lekoelea.

"And it's not as if we were attending a creche parents' meetings or taking kids to school, it was being just being naughty.

"Coaches would always fight with us over this. We were just childish. We didn't understand the importance of time."

Any interesting rituals before they played?

"I would shave my head. After that, I would feel ready for anything.

"Another thing I would never before play a game was PlayStation, I've stopped playing it though these days, that was after my son beat me 5-0. That made me retire."

Benedict Vilakazi.

Who was the Jokester?

"Jimmy Kauleza, Steve Lekoelea, Tonic Chabalala…almost everyone. We had an open environment at Pirates so anyone could come up with a joke.

"I remember our assistant coach Harris Choeu, at one stage there was a master's game and we were there watching them play.

"He tried a back heel trick but only to pass the opponents who took the ball and went on to score.

"So we gave him a hard time about that. His response was, no listen Tso, once you reach our age when you hear someone calling your name you just pass the ball you don't look first whether it's your teammate or not [laughs]. You only realise after making the mistake that it was actually your opponent who called your name."

Was it a muthi change room?

"It's something that most of the teams will always do to protect their players from getting injured."

Who was the singer?

"Almost everyone used to lead a song. Even the likes of Okonkwo and Lelo Mbele would follow. Most of the time I would just clap my hands.

"Our favourite song was Hey wen'uvale wavala! Hey wen'uvale wavala, hey wena vula!"

Who was the best dressed and worst dressed?

"Steve Lekoelea and Pollen Ndlanya loved clothes. Those two used to dress smart.

"The rest of us would just put on our All Stars, and jeans from Skipper Bar."

Rate the coach's team talk…

"Do you remember Kerjean [French coach Jean-Yves Kerjean]? He once put only three attacking players in his starting line-up and the rest were defenders. That was in a Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

"We asked ourselves as players this is the way we are going to approach Chiefs. Chiefs is going to give us a hiding here, we are going there to mark and not to play?

"Kerjean's response was no don't worry guys we are going to beat Chiefs with these three attacks.

"His team talk was crazy though; he would tell us you must go there and fight like a lion when a lion is eating grass. Eish in football [laughs].

"You see, only if there were cameras in change rooms or in team talks, you wouldn't believe some of the things that are said there.

"Some of the things that are said in there are lies. When you look at the performance you will assume this team have the best coach when in fact all he says it's nonsense. It's the players who hide a coach's incapabilities."
