Bench 'fight', offside drama, penalty soft and missed, Saleng teaser

On Weekend Wrap, there is spotlight on Kaizer Chiefs' 10th league defeat, teammates on each other's throes, and a questionable offside call against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Some drama in Atteridgeville!

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso had a mouthful to say to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after his side's Nedbank Cup win over Sekhukhune United at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

The Brazilians went into the encounter missing many of their regulars due to Bafana Bafana duty just days earlier and needed an extra-time winner from substitute Jayden Adams to see off an a steely Babina Noko side.

The match came just three days before the Tshwane giants meet North African giants Esperance in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals, and Downs will rue the fact it was not wrapped up in 90 minutes.

In the dying minutes, Peter Shalulile scored what seemed to be a legitimate goal after a cross from Arthur Sales, but he was ruled offside.

"Well, first of all, I think we should clearly understand what we are doing here today. This match should not have been played today, and people who are responsible in South Africa for football must understand that the clubs defend their country," Cardoso said on SuperSport TV.

The drama was not restricted to the offside call, however. The Sekhukhune bench almost turned into a boxing ring as Katlego Otladisa was seen angrily charging towards teammate Keletso Makgalwa, who had just come off the field.

It is believed this was the winger's reaction to something Makgalwa had said.

Bad to worse for Chiefs

The Soweto giants' top four ambitions suffered a major dent as they were defeated 2-1 by Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Nduduzo Sibiya and Knox Mutizwa were enough to see the KZN outfit complete a double over the men in Gold and Black, who pulled one back through Yusuf Maart. The goal also served as some form of redemption for the skipper, who had missed his spot-kick just minutes earlier.

How the penalty came about also received scrutiny, with some of the view Chiefs were given a soft penalty as Gladwin Shitolo had minimal, if any, contact with Glody Lilepo, who went tumbling to the ground in a duel between the two.

It is worrying times for Amakhosi, who have seven games to salvage something of what is turning into yet another horrendous campaign.

Pirates tease Saleng return?

Bucs, who are set to take on MC Alger in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday evening, had the social media space buzz by releasing training footage where winger Monnapule Saleng was hard at work with the rest of his teammates at gym.

The 26-year-old is reportedly embroiled in a contractual dispute with the club and has not been in a competitive action since December 7 in a Champions League group stage clash against Al Ahly.

He did, however, feature for a second-string Bafana Bafana side in a two-legged CHAN qualifier against Al Ahly but was later released from the squad ahead of the return fixture.

Recent reports indicate that although Saleng had several training sessions with the Houghton-based side, he did not travel with the squad to Algeria.

Further reports point to a likely exit at the end of the season.
