DStv Premiership match report Baroka FC v Mamelodi Sundowns 14 February 2022

Mamelodi Sundowns missed the chance to move 20 points at the top of the DStv Premiership table after drawing 1-1 with Baroka FC on Monday evening.

Masandawana issued two changes from the win on Friday against Al-Hilal Omdurman where Surprise Ralani and Teboho Mokoena replaced Gaston Sirino and Rivaldo Coetzee, with Sekela Sithole the only change by Baroka.

It was no surprise to see the table-toppers ponder the first chance 20 minutes gone when a free-kick far of the area by Lyle Lakay crashed against the base of the post.

Then within a minute, the host got a lifeline after a flying strike from Evidence Makgopa coincided with Ntiyiso Mbombi whose cutback was handled by Rushine De Reuck handle in the box. Fortunately for the defending champions, the resultant spot-kick which by Basil Mphahlele sailed high and wide of target.

Sundowns continued to bother the host well inside 34 minutes and watched Lakay clattered the woodwork again off a powerful drive left of the area.

There were activity on the bench by Masandawana in the last three minutes to halftime, which had Erwin Saavedra given his first league outing in place of the injured Pavol Safranko.

Sundowns' dominant first half managed to bear fruits two minutes from the break after a well-taken free-kick outside the area by Lakay sailed into the top corner.

The Tshwane giants didn't seemed content with the solitary strike and fancied a second 12 minutes later through a glancing header by De Reuck off a corner-kick.

Masandawana continued to launch chances inside the closing quarter and saw another powerful free-kick by Lakay hit the woodwork with goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze well beaten.

Whilst chances continued, Baroka snatched a point in the final minute through a first-time strike on the volley by Richard Mbulu after Masandawana failed to clear their lines.
