Former Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United striker James Keene has officially retired from football.

On Wednesday evening, former Wits and Matsatsantsa goal-getter James Keen announced that he had officially retired from football after an 18-year-long professional career.

Between 2016 and 2019, the English striker scored 16 goals in 61 league appearances during his time in the South African top-flight, which was sandwiched between spells in England, Israel and Sweden.

"My friends, after 18 years of professional full-time football, the time has come for me to make the hardest decision of my life," Keene said in a statement shared across his social media platforms.

"The decision to hang up my boots is one that has taken months of thought and heartache. But after a lot of conversations with my managers, my family and friends - I've finally come to the decision to retire from the game that I love.

"This journey of mine has been epic and amazing. It's had highs and lows, cup final wins and cup final defeats. The game has had a huge impact on my life, and I've loved every minute of it. Even in the darkest days, because it's then when you learn so much about yourself..."
