'It bothers me that he never got 100 caps'

In his recent interview on SuperSport TV, former SuperSport United tactician Gavin Hunt listed the best players he coached, and it makes for interesting reading.

Hunt has had a storied career as coach, a career he ventured into following his playing days that were curtailed by injury.

He led SuperSport to an incredible trio of back-to-back league championships, while also going on to guide Kaizer Chiefs to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in 2021.

These are but two among a litany of highlights in the PSL, where he recently celebrated 1000 matches  barking instructions from the bench.

Goalkeeper: Ronwen Williams

If you look at Ronwen in the last few years, the way he's gone to the next level, to get to that space of Ballon d'Ors [nomination], in my opinion, he should have gone to Europe."

Right-back: Nazeer Allie

"For consistency and ability, Nazeer Allie was very good for me. He was steady."

Left-back: David Kannemeyer

"For steadiness, I would say David Kannemeyer. I liked him."

Centre-back: Bongani Khumalo & Morgan Gould

"I won a lot with them."

Central midfielder: Jabulani Mendu

"He was fantastic there at (Moroka) Swallows. He should have played in the higher level."

Central midfielder: Johannes Molatedi

"The other midfield player I coached, 'Chippa' Molatedi, and I think he was magnificent."

Wingers: Elias Pelembe & Daine Klate

"Both are goalscorers and both are providers, they would score eight, nine goals per season, which is what you want."

Strikers: Benni McCarthy & Glen Salmon

"Salmon, it troubles me that he never got 100 caps for Bafana.
