Kaizer Chiefs nine biggest defeats after record loss to Mamelodi Sundowns

Following Kaizer Chiefs' record-breaking defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, here is a look at the club's nine biggest losses in the PSL era.

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs suffered their worst-ever league defeat in the PSL era (1996 to present) on Saturday after being humiliated 4-0 away to reigning champios Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld.

Masandawana opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Gastón Sirino before last season's Golden Boot winner Peter Shalulile scored twice to double, and triple his side's advantage on the night.

The record-breaking rout was then completed by new Downs signing Abubeker Nassir who came off the bench to mark his debut for the club with a well-taken goal late in the second half.

Prior to Saturday's defeat, Chiefs had never lost by more than a three goals in the modern era, although the club had tasted defeat by such a three-goal margin on eight previous occassions.

The most recent was last season's shock 4-1 reversal at home to PSL newcomers Royal AM while the first came back in 2003 when the Amakhosi were downed 3-0 by Soweto derby rivals Orlando Pirates.

Kaizer Chiefs' nine biggest defeats in the PSL era:

  1. Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 Kaizer Chiefs (August 2022)
  2. Kaizer Chiefs 1-4 Royal AM (September 2021)
  3. Kaizer Chiefs 0-3 Orlando Pirates (December 2001)

  8. Kaizer Chiefs 0-3 Chippa United (April 2018)

Arthur Zwane's side will be hoping to bounce back this weekend when they play host to newly-promoted Richards Bay, who currently occupy top spot in the league standings after three matches played.
