In this edition of "My First Pay Cheque," KickOff speaks to former Jomo Cosmos, SuperSport United, and Golden Arrows goalkeeper Sherwin Naicker.
The retired goalkeeper reveals how he spent his entire first-team salary on his family in just one day.
Who did you sign for?
"My official professional first pay cheque was with SuperSport United. However, before joining the first team, if you showed promise, they would give you a small amount during your time in the academy.
"It was in 2009, and I was 18 years old when I received my first pay cheque. That was my first year with the SuperSport first team."
How much was it?
"It was R4,500. I had originally asked for R20,000, but they offered me R4,500. They explained that this was the base salary for being promoted from the club's academy, but I wasn't aware of that at the time."
How did you celebrate this?
"It's a funny story because I had known ahead of time that I was going to sign with the first team and would receive some money for it. However, once I got the cheque, I spent it all on the very first day.
"By the end of that day, it was completely gone. I bought new clothes, got gifts for my brother and my mother. I spent it all in a day."
What did you buy for yourself?
"I probably bought some shoes, but I can't recall everything to be honest. I do still have the jacket I bought for my brother, though.
"By the first week of the month, I was already asking my parents for money again.
"But since I was living in the academy, I didn't really need that much money."
