In this edition of My Muti Story, KickOff catches up with former Jomo Cosmos player Sibusiso Mhlongo.
Mhlongo shares a story about how he was once tasked with smearing muti on the back of former Wits University FC striker Gareth Devine.
I'm sure you have an interesting story to tell about muti during your days at Jomo Cosmos?"
"A lot of things were poured in the goalposts and along the goal lines. Sometimes, we were told to carry muti from the dressing room to the pitch in our hands.
"It happened to me at Jomo Cosmos. I used muti against Gareth Devine. We were playing against Wits University FC at Milpark Stadium, I think it was the Coca-Cola Cup match.
"The instruction was, 'As soon as this white man turns his back to you, smear him with this muti on the back of his head,' hahaha!"
Who was that player?
"It was Gareth Devine; he used to score a lot for Wits."
Why were you doing it?
"Devine was a good header of the ball, and the plan was to make him shoot wide, hahaha! And I did smear the stuff on him, hahaha!
"We were defending a corner kick when I got the chance to brush it on the back of his head, and he was unaware I was applying the muti."
He didn't notice?
"Nah, remember, it was during a corner kick, and we were pushing each other inside the box."
Who provided the muti?
"He was never shown to us; he used to send the team's manager to handle that. You never asked questions; all they would say is, 'Hey man, it's time to go to the car wash.' Hahaha!"
What was the outcome?
"Wits beat us 1-0 that day. At least Devine wasn't the one who scored the goal.
"Teams use muti just to protect their brands and nothing more."
