Players Union on cardiac arrests in football

The Footballers Union of South Africa believes that the number of sudden cardiac arrests in domestic football can be reduced if specific measures are implemented by the powers that be in local football.

South Africa is mourning the sudden death of Durban City FC midfielder Sinamandla Zondi, who collapsed during a warm-up in a fixture against Milford FC at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday.

"Risks can be minimized through regular medical check-ups, fitness and conditioning programs, emergency response plans, on-field medical staff, and advanced medical equipment," observes Taelo 'Salter' Motloung, speaking to KickOff.com.

"These measures can help reduce the risk of tragedies like sudden cardiac arrest, as seen in cases such as (that of) Lukhaya Velele and other incidents where players have collapsed during matches or training.

"We are advocating to prioritise players’ safety and wellbeing," he stated, before sending a message of condolence.

"On behalf of the Football Union of South Africa, we extend our deepest condolences on the loss of your loved one.

"The passing of Sinamandla Zondi is a tragic reminder of the fragility of life, and we stand in solidarity with Durban City FC and the entire football community during this difficult time.
