In this edition of Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff catches up with former Lamontville Golden Arrows star, Lucky Sibeko.
Sibeko, who now works with the Abafana Bes'thende development team, shares the origin of his nickname, "Y2K."
What's your nickname?
"Y2K."
Tell us about it. How did it come about?
"[Laughs] It all started when we Golden Arrows were promoted from the National First Division to the Premier Soccer League in the year 2000.
"There was a guy from Lamontville who said, 'The year 2000 millennium is here, Y2K is here!' He was excited to see a club from his township being promoted to the top tier. Lamontville was going to be in the spotlight again, thanks to Y2K."
Did you like it when you got the nickname?
"I was very happy. It's a nice nickname, and I love it. Even today, people still call me Y2K."
What does a nickname mean to a footballer, and why is it important?
"In the past, we had many nicknames. Owning a nickname signifies that you are a talented footballer, people don't just give nicknames to bad players. They first observe your style of play before assigning a nickname, deciding which name best suits your style."
Before Y2K, did you have any other nickname?
"Before, I didn't have a nickname, I was simply known as Lucky. [Laughs.]"
If you could choose another nickname, what would it be?
"I wouldn't swap Y2K for anything else. Hhayi, Angshintshi. I'm sticking with that one. A nickname has to come from the people."
