Amajimbos claim vital win to keep Afcon hopes alive

Duncan Crowie's SA U-17 side claimed a vital 3-2 win over Zambia to keep their Afcon hopes alive ahead of a decisive clash against Nigeria in their final Group B encounter.

Michael Dokunmu proved the match-winner after scoring the decisive goal in the 76th minute after Vicky Mkhawana grabbed an impressive first-half brace.

Amajimbos currently sit third in Group B and will play their final group game against Nigeria on Saturday, with the winner joining leaders Morocco in the quarter-finals of the competition.

"It was more than a fight," Crowie said post-match.

"We were 2-0 up and they came back and made it very difficult for us, putting us under pressure with deep and long balls that put our defence under pressure.

"But, as I mentioned to the guys, it was important for us to show that we can play. If they did not allow us to play, then at least we showed we can fight, and I say fight in a very a nice way so that we ensure they [Zambia] don't create opportunities.

"With all the pressure that they put us under, I don't think they really created clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities, which is very good.

"Like I did the other night [against Morocco], I will sit up again and cut clips to make it clear to the players what they did right and what they can still improve on in preparation for our next game against Nigeria."

Saturday's encounter will prove interesting for match-winner Dokunmu who chose to represent South Africa over Nigeria after being eligible to represent both nations with a South African mother and Nigerian father.

Kick-off is at 21:00.
