Another FIFA appointment for SA referee

South Africa has again been provided with joy on the international officiating scene following the selection of one of the country's referees for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

The junior international tournament will run from May 20-June 11 in Argentina.

After having been at the African Nations Championship (CHAN finals), Abongile Tom has been selected as one of 25 referees for the Under-20 World Cup.

Tom has already done AFCON qualifiers, COSAFA Cup matches, CAF Champions League, and Confederation Cup matches through doing duty on the domestic scene in the DStv Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship.

He has now been selected amongst 25 referees from across the globe in a list that has also has 38 assistants and 18 video match officials.

According to FIFA, he selected match officials will participate in a final preparation seminar a few days before the tournaments starts.

The match officials at the Under-20 will be part of a new cycle of officials ahead of the FIFA World Cup in 2026.

After Tom takes care of business in Argentina, South Africa will have Akhona Makalima on show at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand from July 20-August 20

At the last FIFA Men's World Cup, Victor Gomes took centre stage when he ran with the whistle in two games and ultimately returned home a millionaire before announcing his retirement with Zakhele Siwela running the line.

The Under-20 World Cup draw takes place on Friday, April 20.
