'We failed completely' - Notoane steps down as Under-23 head coach following Afcon failure

David Notoane has dramatically stepped down from his role as men's national Under-23 head coach following his side's failure to qualify for the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Notoane's side failed to qualify for the continental tournament - to be hosted in Morocco between 24 June and 8 July 2023 - after defeat to Congo over a two-legged qualifier.

The defeat also means that South Africa failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Notoane announced in an interview with Robert Marawa on the Marawa Sports Worldwide show that he has decided to resign from his position.

"We failed completely, and when you've failed, we have to take accountability and look for ways to fix it," Notoane said.

"There was no contract anyway, soon I will be stepping down. Maybe someone young needs to step in.

"I served, I ran the race. My dreams and aspirations will happen but maybe this is not the time, maybe with the right support.

"I came to the decision [to step down] with the support of my wife. So, I'd rather focus on my work."
