Official: Hendrick Ekstein lands new club, teaming up with Ghana legend Michael Essien

Ekstein, 29, had been on the market since his abrupt departure from Sabah on 23 December and was subsequently linked with a return to the Absa Premiership.

However, after ruling out coming back to South Africa, 'Pule' has opted to move back to Azerbaijan, with the club who first showed interest in his services.

Sabail first made contact with the diminutive midfielder while still contracted to Amakhosi, who duly knocked back their advances before he eventually departed at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Ekstein has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal with Aftandil Hajiyev's side, where he will don the number 27 jersey for the rest of the season.
