‘Hall of fame’ for Riveiro at Pirates

Jose Riveiro will enter new territory on Tuesday evening in his time as Orlando Pirates head coach.

Pirates have travelled to Cape Town, where Stellenbosch FC will host them at Athlone Stadium (19:30) in a game pitting second against third on the Betway Premiership.

The cheapest general admission ticket has been pegged at R70.

This match will push the number of games played by Pirates since Riveiro's appointment up to 120.

Of those encounters, the Spaniard didn't sit on the bench in one as he served a touchline ban in the recent 2-0 defeat away at Marumo Gallants due to four yellow cards.

What makes that 120 count of relevance is that Riveiro will have surpassed Rudi Krol.

Pirates played 119 games with Krol as head coach from 2008-2011, putting him top of the list for games played under all coaches at the club.

Krol took charge of 37 in his first season, 39 in his second and 43 in his third when the Soweto giants won the league plus the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.

The Dutchman then had his contract not renewed with Julio Leal then taking over at the start of the following season.

Riveiro is also into his third season at Pirates and has his contract up at the end of June.

Before the end of his deal with Bucs, he still has unfinished business in the Betway Premiership, Nedbank Cup, and CAF Champions League.

He has already won the MTN8 three years in a row and is seeking to make history by doing the same in the Nedbank Cup, which will be a first in the history of the competition.

Pirates have been winners of the last two editions of the Nedbank Cup and play Marumo Gallants in the semis in April.

The domestic league chase is on, while in the Champions League, there is a date with MC Alger in the quarterfinals.

Pirates have been notorious with changing coaches before they have completed at least 12 months at the club.

Throughout the PSL years, Pirates have had a long list of coaches who had failed to last 12 months in the job, who include Ronald Mkandawire, Shuaibu Amodu, Jean-Yves Kerjean, Milutin Sredojevic (first spell), and Bibey Mutombo.

Owen da Gama, Julio Leal, Augusto Palacios, Vladimir Vermezovic, Muhsin Ertugral, Kjell Jonevret, Rulani Mokwena, and Fadlu Davids/Mandla Ncikazi also fall in the same pot.
