In this edition of Negotiating Behind The Scenes, former SuperSport United player Isaac Mabotsa discusses how neglecting his physical health prevented him from reaching his full potential.
The retired full-back played for several respected clubs in South Africa, including Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits.
Who did you sign for?
"Things went well for me at SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits because those were improvement contracts. SuperSport United is where I earned the most money."
How did you find out they were interested?
"At Kaizer Chiefs, I didn't have an agent, I only started working with an agent at Wits. He informed me that SuperSport was interested. Wits had just been relegated but refused to let me go. I went down with them to the National First Division. Coach Pitso Mosimane understood my situation and waited until my contract expired, after that I went there because I had already signed a pre-contract with SuperSport United."
Where did you meet?
"We met at the MultiChoice offices."
Who was there?
"Stan Matthews, my agent, and I were present. Both parties were satisfied."
What surprised you?
"Nothing. At SuperSport, you also receive benefits like medical aid, which was my first experience having one. It truly helped me and my family."
Did you get everything you wanted?
"Definitely."
Did you see out the contract?
"I signed for two years, but when I was in the six months of my contract, coach Pitso Mosimane, who had signed me, left to assist Carlos Alberto Pereira at Bafana Bafana.
"Gavin Hunt came in. I had to be released because he did not like my style of play. That's when I moved to Mpumalanga Black Aces."
What would you change?
"I'd be more disciplined. You know, as youngsters, we used to stay up till late and not take care of our bodies. I didn't take care of my body enough, hence I suffered injuries."
