‘Perfect time for him to have a taste of Europe’

Teenage defender Ime Okon has been billed as having all the attributes of making it in Europe following his meteoric rise in domestic football.

Okon (19) has already been to FC Midtjylland for a two-week training stint after playing half a season of playing professional football at SuperSport United.

The 22 appearances that Okon has made have also already won him recognition from Bafana Bafana after being included in the preliminary squad for the AFCON.

"Danish football must never be underestimated because it provides the path to the top European leagues," argues Frank Schoeman who played for Danish club Lyngby.

"So, if the boy does get to sign with Midtjylland that will be a good stepping stone to get to places like England.

"In Denmark, the conditions are not friendly as football gets to be played in snow and it is all hard running kind of football.

"It is a difficult league to survive so after having played there, you will be prepared for all else in Europe.

"I believe that having been brought up playing in South Africa then he needs to maintain the approach of playing the ball and giving himself another two seconds on the ball instead of just kicking it forward.

"What they saw in him here in South Africa is what he must continue doing there.

"The fact that his career has moved so fast shows the potential that he has because for a 19-year-old to get a break at a top club in Europe is every kid's dream.

"At 19, he can play for two years in Denmark, adjust, and adapt to Europe and then move.

"I feel it is the perfect time for him to have a taste of Europe.

"The plus is that he will grow in Denmark, and I'm reminded of Rivaldo Coetzee whose injury issues led to him not moving to Europe.

"From Scandinavia, it will be easy to get to England, Spain, Italy, Germany, or France with ease.

"Scandinavia is difficult and prepares you much better for going into the top leagues in Europe especially when you are with a club that plays in the Champions League or Europa League.

"The Danish clubs know that it will not cost them a lot of money to get players from South Africa and then move them on for a profit.

"South Africa has a good referral in Denmark because of Sibusiso Zuma and Josta Dladla amongst others played there.

"The South African market makes sense for clubs in Denmark especially with a 19-year-old that they can sell on," says Schoeman.
