Chiefs wait on Sundowns for Mkhulise?

Kaizer Chiefs' midfield options could be heavily reliant on Mamelodi Sundowns, who hold all the cards in deciding the fate of two players.

After Chiefs were seemingly favourites to sign Azam and Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum, it has emerged, as reported by Soccer Laduma, that Sundowns have entered the race for the same player.

Azam are reported to have placed an astronomical figure for his services, with the Tshwane giants' big spending power putting them in a strong position to land the 27-year-old ahead of their rivals.

Another midfielder who could be on Amakhosi's radar is Sphelele Mkhulise, whose contract with The Brazilians reaches expiry at the end of June.

However, the club has an option to extend, and, it is understood, they have until the end of May to indicate whether they are keeping him or not.

"I like him a lot, although I feel he should have done better. He arrived at Sundowns in (the) 2018/19 season, he played 103 matches and scored six goals, assisted four," ex-Chiefs star Jabu Pule (now Mahlangu) said on SABC Sport's Soccer Zone.

"His best season was the following season, 2019/20, where he played 22 games, scored four goals and assisted one. In CAF, he played 35 games, scored four goals and assisted one.

"So, he's a player I think since 2018, when you look at 103 games, I think he should have played more games. But at Sundowns, there's a lot of quality.

"But I like him. Maybe he can go help in Naturena, with the experience that he has of Champions League and also winning trophies," 'Ngwana Wa Tshwenya' suggested.

Mkhulise appears not to be in the future plans of head coach Miguel Cardoso, with his last match having come almost a month ago, as the diminutive midfield man came on for the last 20 minutes in a 2-0 win over AmaZulu FC.

The 29-year-old has not been in the matchday squad since then, with no change in fortunes in the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League either.
