OFFICIAL: African coach pays price for AFCON 2025 failure

An African coach has faced the ultimate consequence after his team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Mauritania Football Federation (FFRIM) has announced its decision to part ways with manager Amir Abdou.

The call was made following a review meeting to assess the national team's performance in the qualification campaign, which saw them miss out on a spot at the tournament in Morocco next year.

Mauritania finished third in Group C with seven points, trailing group winners Egypt and second-placed Botswana. The Mourabitounes managed only two victories from their six matches, suffering three defeats and earning one draw.

"The Council welcomed and approved the agreement reached by the President of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Yahya, with the national coach, Mr Amir Abdou, to amicably terminate the contract between the two parties," the FFRIM stated.

"The FFRIM Council extends its sincere thanks and great appreciation to Mr Amir Abdou for the remarkable services he has rendered to the Nation throughout his technical leadership, marked by notable successes, such as the qualification of the Mourabitounes for the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

"The Council wishes Amir Abdou all the success in his future career."

In a swift response, the federation confirmed the appointment of Spaniard Aritz Lopez Garai as Abdou's successor.

They also outlined their commitment to securing a brighter future for Mauritania's national teams.

"The Council instructed the National Teams Committee to work with the National Technical Directorate to develop a roadmap covering all national teams with the aim of enabling the first national team to qualify again for the African Cup of Nations, and for the various national teams to be competitive in all regional, continental, and international competitions," they added.
