'Problematic' Onana accused of disrespecting AFCON

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has been accused of disrespecting his nation and the tournament.

Former Arsenal striker and Tongolese international Emmanuel Adebayor shared his thoughts on the shot-stopper's situation, criticising his actions leading up to the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.

Onana has been attracting attention for his off-field interactions with the Cameroonian side, having initially requested to join the squad at a later date during their AFCON preparations.

When he joined up with the squad just a few hours before their clash against Guinea, in a private jet, former Senegal star El Hadji Diouf reportedly had to calm the 27-year-old down after he found out that he was not going to be a part of the team.

These events have led Adebayor to claim that the keeper has alienated himself from the nation's supporters.

"He [Onana] did not respect Cameroon. I was a player like him, and even being the most important player in my selection, I never acted in this way [arriving on the day of the match]," he told Sport News Africa via GOAL

"The fact that this situation is happening shows that there is a problem, perhaps even within the federation.

"He risks losing big, because he has alienated the Cameroonian supporters, as well as many African supporters and undoubtedly certain members of the team."

Cameroon boss Rigobert Song explained why Onana was left out of his side's opener, explaining that everyone in the camp knew that he would not participate.

The Indomitable Lions' next fixture will be against defending champions Senegal, who are coming into the encounter with confidence after comfortably beating Gambia 3-0 in their opener.
