Zimbabwe dent Nigeria's World Cup push

Nigeria 1-1 Zimbabwe

Nigeria endured a frustrating evening after a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Group C at the  Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Super Eagles once more rolled out the big guns in Victor Osimhen, who were the difference in the win over Rwanda, though Marshall Munetsi and Knowledge Musona picked out the eleven for the Warriors.

Zimbabwe, who rallied from two goals down to earn a share of the spoils with Benin last Thursday, held their own throughout the opening spell.

Osimhen turned up albeit late in the second half and finished off Ola Aina's assist to make the breakthrough, but Tawanda Chirewa got clear at the death and salvaged a point.

Rwanda 1-1 Lesotho

Rwanda leapfrogged Benin to second-place in Group D despite seeing a resilient Lesotho rally back for a 1-1 draw in Kigali.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Fabrice Ntwari once again started between the sticks for the host, while former PSL player Tshwarelo Bereng earned another outing for Lesotho.

Likoena's resistance were broken in the opening-quarter of the second half when a long-ball over the top released Jojea Kwizera to go clear and finished from close-range.

The set-back didn't break the visitors, who raced back on level terms late in the half through a snap finish from Lehlohonolo Fothoane.

Uganda 1-0 Guinea

Uganda boosted their hopes to a spot in next year's World Cup finals with a 1-0 win over Guinea in a Group G qualifying encounter.

South African-based goalkeeper Ismail Watenga started on the bench for the Cranes, with Serhou Guirassy lining up in attack for the visitors.

Following a tightly contested opening, the Cranes raced ahead under ten minutes before the interval through a decent effort from Allan Okello.

Syli National were unabl stage a comeback after falling behind, therefore saw the Cranes to a creditable victory.

Angola 1-2 Cape Verde

Cape Verde edged further towards outright qualification for a maiden World Cup finals appearance with a 2-1 win over Angola in a Group D qualifier.

Interestingly, the Blue Sharks showed a double substitution midway in the first half in the way of Telmo Arcanjo and Dailon Livramento.

This initiative paid dividends on the stroke of halftime where a certain Livramento capitalised on a layoff from Jovane Cabral to make the breakthrough.

Palancas Negras hit back five minutes after halftime as Gelson Dala caught the visitors napping and finished off a telling attacking move.

However, the Angolans were caught square once more and conceded yet again when Livramento made good work from more positive play to rattle the back of the net.
