Egypt break from tradition to appoint Mohamed Salah as national team captain

Salah (28) has been appointed as the Pharaohs' new permanent captain by head coach Hossam Al-Badri ahead of the country's upcoming 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations and 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns.

The Liverpool star's appointment sees the North African giants break from an age-old tradition that previously dictated that the most senior player in the squad would automatically captain the national team.

"Hossam Al-Badri, the coach of the first national football team, has decided to award the captain's armband to Mohamed Salah," the EFA said in an official statement on Monday.

"The decision came after the coach informed the players who preceded Salah in seniority and who supported this step. Al-Badri believes that the next stage needs stability and stability in some matters, including the leadership badge.

"The technical and administrative staff seeks to arrange matters in the coming period to achieve the dream of the Egyptians and football fans to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar."

The two-time African footballer of the year has scored 35 goals in 70 appearances for Egypt thus far a return that is second only to legendary striker Hossam Hassan, who netted 68 times in 176 games for the national team.
