Official: African team submit protest to FIFA after WCQ defeat

An African national football team has filed a formal complaint with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) following a defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier earlier in March.

FIFA has confirmed that it has received an official complaint from the Liberia Football Federation in relation to the Lone Star's 1-0 loss to Tunisia at the Samuel Kanyon Stadium last Wednesday.

The LFA claims there was a distinct pattern of match manipulation evident during the match between the two teams. As reported by AllAfrica, the LFA lodged their complaint on March 20, alleging that the referee denied three valid penalty appeals from the Lone Stars.

According to the report, FIFA's Head of Qualifiers and International Matches, Gordon Savic, acknowledged the receipt of Liberia's protest.

"We will pass them on to the FIFA Refereeing and FIFA Disciplinary Committees, as it is related to the refereeing performance at a match and to a 'protest,' which would fall under the jurisdiction of the latter area," Savic stated.

It has been reported that the LFA's letter, signed by Secretary General Emmett Crayton, requests a rematch based on the assertion that officiating mistakes negatively affected the outcome.

Liberia subsequently defeated Sao Tome and Principe 2-1 on Monday in their World Cup qualifying campaign as they are vying for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.

The Lone Star currently holds the third position with 10 points, trailing four points behind Group H leaders Tunisia. It remains to be seen what FIFA's decision will be regarding this issue.
