The 16 teams that have qualified for the 2024/25 CAF Champions League group stage have now been confirmed, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates leading South Africa's charge.

The first and second preliminary round phase of the competition was wrapped up this past weekend, with 16 teams advancing to the next round and 16 others packing their bags.

There was a huge upset as Angolan giants Petro de Luanda were dumped out the tournament by Maniema Union of DR Congo, who won their second preliminary tie 2-1 on aggregate.

South African giants Pirates and Sundowns, meanwhile, claimed comprehensive victories over their opponents Jwaneng Galaxy and Mbabane Swallows, respectively, to qualify for the group stage.

The Buccaneers walked away 3-0 winners over Galaxy in their tie, claiming revenge on the Botswana outfit that eliminated them at the same stage of the tournament last season, while Masandawana secured a comfortable 8-0 aggregate win over Swallows from Eswatini.

Reigning champions Al Ahly also made it to the group stage alongside Fagrie Lakay's Pyramids FC, while Elias Mokwana's Esperance de Tunis also qualified ahead of the draw for the group, the pots of which have already been determined.
