Did Chiefs make the right call with Del Campo?

Ruben del Campo, who was close to sealing a move to Kaizer Chiefs earlier this season is enduring a difficult spell in front of goal in the fourth tier of Spanish football.

For the duration of the 2024/25 season, the Soweto giants strengthened their team, completing at least eight signings.

During Janauary, Amakhosi were seeking a striker to enhance their offensive capabilities, and one of the individuals who was rumoured to be joining the club was Swiss forward Ruben del Campo.

Del Campo was strongly linked with Chiefs, and reports had indicated that the Atletico Madrid academy graduate engaged in talks with the Motaung-owned club and even reached an agreement on personal terms.

Nevertheless, a possible agreement did not materialize as Chiefs chose to pursue Tashreeq Morris instead.

After missing out on joining the Betway Premiership club, the Fribourg-born striker eventually signed with UCAM Murcia CF, a team in the Segunda Federation in Spain.

A few months in Spain, the 25-year-old forward has thus far played 10 league games, netting three goals without any assists for the club competing in the fourth division of Spanish football.

Two of the forward's three strikes came against Real Balompedica Linense in a 2-1 win on 23 February.

Del Campo has started in the club's last five games and has only found the net once after being used mainly as a striker and winger, according to Transfermarkt.

UCAM Murcia are currently third on the log on 50 points after 30 matches while La Union sit first on 61 points.
