Carabao Cup match report Arsenal v Manchester City

Manchester City progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after thumping Arsenal 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

Runar Runarsson started in goal as Cedric Soares, Dani Ceballos and Gabriel Martinelli also came in for the Gunners, while City gave a rare start to Zack Steffen between the sticks.

Arsenal were given a nightmare start when Gabriel Jesus charged at an inch-perfect cross from Oleksandr Zinchenko to head past Runarsson

Alexandre Lacazette missed a big chance to draw the Gunners level towards the midway stage following a good move from the back.

Lacazette atoned for the miss on the half-hour mark when he got on the end of a ball from Martinelli to head in with sheer ease as the Citizens failed to clear their defensive lines.

City should've regained the lead in the final four minutes of the half through Jesus following a one-touch move outside the area, but Runarsson narrowed the angle with a point-blank save.

Martinelli, who limped uncomfortably towards the end of the first half, made way for Nicolas Pepe four minutes in the second half.

Arsenal were behind again on 54 minutes after a poor handling and positioning from Runarsson helped a curling free-kick from Riyad Mahrez into the net.

Pep Guardiola's side upped the ante five minutes later when a counter-attack from Fernandinho culminated with Phil Foden, who lobbed over an on-rushing Runarsson.

The Gunners looked to regain momentum soon thereafter, but City weren't having any of it on 73 minutes as Aymeric Laporte charged down a ball from Foden at the back-post to head home.

Guardiola's side pushed for more goals inside the final minutes of the match, but the four was enough to seal their spot in the semi-finals.
