OFFICIAL: Ex-Liverpool star announces retirement

A former Liverpool star has announced his retirement from professional football after failing to find a new club.

The former Cameroon international has been a free agent since parting ways with Liverpool at the end of the 2023/2024 campaign when his contract expired.

The club have now confirmed that the 33-year-old is now hanging up his boots as he remains without a club.

Matip's time at Liverpool ended on a sour note after he picked up an injury in 2023, which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

There were reports about Schalke and Hamburg attempting to make a move for the Cameroon-born defender, but it seems he is more closing to leaving the game than moving to another club.

Matip would be the second former Liverpool player to hang up his boots after Thiago Alcantara decided to call it a day after leaving the Premier League club in June.

Some of the other big names to retire this year included Andres Iniesta, Raphael Varane, Toni Kroos and Pepe.
