Arsenal extend winless streak after thrilling draw

Premier League leaders Arsenal extended their winless run to three matches after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Southampton on Friday night.

Mikel Arteta made two changes from the Gunners' draw at West Ham United as Fabio Vieira replaced Granit Xhaka while Kieran Tierney made way for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

In a fiery opening, the host conceded as Aaron Ramsdale looked to start play from the back only to pass straight to Carlos Alcaraz, who took one touch and thumped in emphatically.

Arsenal were cut to size again a little to 14 minutes when former Gunners player Theo Walcott ran in-behind Gabriel Magalhaes to finish off a through-ball Alcaraz.

The title-chasing Gunners reduced the tally six minutes apart after Gabriel Martinelli found space in the centre of the area and fired in a pin-point cross from Bukayo Saka.

Southampton were forced to make a substitution four minutes ahead of the break where Duje Caleta-Car slotted in the place of a certain Jan Bednarek.

Arteta's men nearly drew level with a glancing header from Ben White following a corner, but Alcaraz was alert and cleared off the goal-line on the brink of halftime.

The Gunners looked for a quick equaliser after the break and came close through a cross-cum shot from a tight angle by Vieira, but Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu thwarted.

Following a slow start from halftime, the Saints bounced back and snatched a third midway through the second half when a flick from a corner allowed Caleta-Car to pounce and head beyond Ramsdale.

Arsenal didn't lose focus and regained momentum when Martin Odegaard played a one-two outside the area with White and curled in to reduce the deficit once again.

The Saints lost courage at the death and surrendered advantage as Saka reacted quickest to a loose ball from a spill by Bazunu and slotted home.

More drama followed with seconds to play after Leandro Trossard dropped a shoulder around the area and fired off the woodwork, as the match ended level and the Gunners maintaining their title hopes.
