Premier League match report Manchester City v Sheffield United

Manchester City strengthened their grip on top spot in the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday evening.

Aymeric Laporte, Kyle Walker, Fernandinho, Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus started from the win over West Bromwich Albion on the side of the Citizens.

It didn't take the home side long to go ahead after Jesus pounced on a scramble in the six-yard area to finish from close-range following a pass from Torres.

Sheffield, who got the better of Manchester United in midweek, were nearly two goals down soon before the half-hour but Bernardo Silva was unable to make a defensive error count.

Chris Wilder's side attempted to hold their own as the half worse, with City devoid of clear-cut openings in and around the final third of the pitch.

The Citizens had a chance to go two goals up at the resumption following a corner-kick, but Ruben Diaz was unable to make the delivery count in his side's favour.

Jesus was next to threaten the visitors minutes later after charging onto a floating ball in the area to volley goal-wards, but goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale pulled off a blinder of a save.

Sheffield looked to inject more energy in the all-round approach following the closing period and introduced David McGoldrick for Rhian Brewster.

The Citizens' slow passage of play between defence and attack continued in the second stanza, with limited openings in and around the area.

However, Laporte had a chance to increase their advantage from a corner by Ilkay Gundogan towards the closing minutes but didn't profit, as City claimed victory nonetheless.
