FC Barcelona news: Bartomeu on Messi, confirms Alba, Pique, Busquets, Suarez will leave

FC Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has confirmed several high-profile players will depart in the off-season.

The Spanish giants have endured a tumultuous 2019/20 season that hit 'rock bottom' after their 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Friday.

And in the aftermath of the humiliation, captain Lionel Messi reportedly informed the club of his desire to leave 'immediately' which the Blaugrana denied.

However, Quinque Setien has since been sacked along with sporting director Eric Abidal and speaking to Barca TV Bartomeu claimed a number of club icons will leave but Messi will remain under new head coach Ronald Koeman.

"Messi wants to end his career at Barca, he has said that many times. I've spoken to Koeman about him and he has told me Messi will be the pillar of his project," Bartomeu said.

"Messi has a contract with Barca until 2021. I speak to him and his father regularly, and they know that we have a solid project, that a new coach is coming and that he will count on him."

The controversial president who was accused of hiring a PR company to slander the senior players in the media in order to raise his popularity within the fan base went on to clarify who will form the spine of the new project.

"Messi is the best player ever and is not for sale," the 57-year-old explained. "But there are others who won't be sold, some of the younger players. [Marc-Andre] ter Stegen, [Clement] Lenglet, [Frenkie] de Jong, [Nelson] Semedo, [Ousmane] Dembele and [Antoine] Griezmann."

In his straightforward interview, he omitted several high-profile players whom he indicated are at their end of the careers with the Spanish giants, including Luis Saurez, who has now been tipped to rejoin Eredivisie giants AFC Ajax.

"We're talking about a generation of players that have won everything," he said. "I congratulate them for that but now it's time to say an honourable farewell to some of them.

"We will speak with them first out of respect. They have been legends so they have to go in the right way, but there are conversations that need to happen."
