Real lose ground on Barca after shock loss

Real Madrid failed to close the gap on LALIGA leaders FC Barcelona following a 2-1 loss to Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday evening.

Frenchman Aurelien Tchouameni managed to pass fit and thrown in the fray ahead of Brahim Diaz as the reigning champions sole change following the win over Getafe.

A perfect start were on the cards a little to just 12 minutes played where big off-season signing Kylian Mbappe dispatched from a clever angle, but he was flagged for offside by the assistant referee.

It was rather tough in the earlier stages with the sides too conservative and sussing each other out thus unfortunately it reduced the offensive forays.

The home contingent looked to though break clear on the half-hour mark with Alejandro Berenguer weaving inside to strike first-time, but unfortunately didn't trouble Thibaut Courtois at all.

No substitutions ahead of the commencement for the second half took place – leaving the respective charges unchanged from the opening spell.

Madrid were stunned eight minutes in when a punch by Courtois following a swerving delivery into the area by Inaki Williams pounced off Berenguer and into the net.

The moment brought a sense of uncertainty and saw the visitors looked to the dugout to introduce Brahim in place of one-time Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos.

Around about the same time, Madrid received a big chance to go level when a foul in the area led to a penalty but Mbappe failed to rattle the net.

Madrid continued probing and with 12 minutes to play got rewarded after Englishman Jude Bellingham showed predatory instincts to guide in a rebound.

The home boys were back in front two minutes later as a poor defensive play by Federico Valverde earned substitute Gorka Guruzeta right to intervene and fire in the near post.

Los Blancos didn't manage to claw their way back and succumbed to defeat – which leaves them further behind leaders FC Barcelona.
