Police and medical staff are reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding the player's death.

The head wounds he sustained is speculated to have come from falling down a flight of stairs.

It is further reported that a medical examiners' preliminary examination of the body suggests that the injuries sustained are consistent with a fall.

Capone, who died at the age of 43, began his professional career at Cagliari, coming up through their youth set-up before making 123 appearances for the first team.

The Serie A outfit released a statement on social media confirming the player's passing, and paid tribute to him.

"All of Cagliari Soccerio learns with shock and deep sadness the news of the disappearance of Andrea Capone, who died at just 43 years old," the club said.

"The connection with his land will remain unbreakable for a guy who has always been known for his professionalism, dedication and passion.

"Qualities that will stay in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him, meet him on and off the field. Cagliari Soccer is holding its family in this moment of great sorrow.

"Rest in peace, Andrea."
