In the 11th minute, Weston McKennie and Dejan Kulusevski combined smartly in the Roma half, but a poor touch from the former was pounced upon. Henrik Mkhitaryan ran at the Juve goal from close to halfway and dummied past Leonardo Bonucci's challenge before shooting hard and low but straight at the advancing goalkeeper.
Roma won a penalty on the half-hour mark when Adrien Rabiot hand-balled from Jordan Vereteout's strike at goal. Veretout stepped up and Wojcech Szczesny guessed the right way but didn't get a strong enough hand to the ball as it went in to the net.
Juve won a penalty in the 44th minute. Ronaldo drove into the area from the left and, after a heavy touch, just beat Pellegrini to the ball, prodding it against his opponent's dangling arm. The Portuguese stepped up and sent Roma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante the wrong way.
But there was still time before the interval for Veretout to restore Roma's lead right on the stroke of half-time. A Juve free-kick was cleared and the hosts were in the clear three on one. Mkhitaryan squared, Veretout controlled and then squeezed a finish past Szczesny.
Dzeko, who has been linked with a move to the Bianconeri, hit the post in the 56th minute. Leonardo Spinazzola got down the left, cut inside and played the ball back. Dzeko muscled a defender out of the way to control, dummied past another and then, with the goal at his mercy, hit the outside of the post.
Ronaldo failed to make the most of a good opportunity soon afterwards when the ball fell kindly to him after Alvaro Morata was tackled, but the Portuguese star's volley was straight at the keeper.
Juve were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Adrian Rabiot picked up a second yellow card.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Bianconeri equalised through no other than that man Ronaldo. Danilo got to the byline and stood the ball up, allowing Ronaldo to tower above three defenders and power the close-range header in to the back of the net to claim a share of the spoils.
