Liverpool remain perfect in Champions League

Liverpool cemented top spot in the League Phase of the UEFA Champions League after edging Girona 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

The Reds welcomed the return from injury of goalkeeper Alisson, as part of the four changes that included Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai after a draw against Newcastle United, in a six-goal thriller.

Arne Slot's charges conceded counter-attacks to Girona in the early stages, as Alisson thwarted one on one efforts from Alejandro Frances and Miguel Gutierrez on two separate occasions.

However, Liverpool slowed down the tempo of the game towards the half-hour mark, as they gained better control.

The Spanish outfit, however, still had the better opportunities, as just before the interval, Yaser Asprilla forced the Reds' Brazilian goalkeeper into an acrobatic save with a strike from the edge of the box.

The first half break did nothing to cool down end to end attacks, as three minutes into the second stanza Arnaut Danjuma tested Alisson, who had reflexes to keep the scores nil-nil.

At the other end, with the hour-mark mark approaching, Andrew Robertson came close to breaking the deadlock for Liverpool with a strike at the near post but shot-stopper Paulo Gazzaniga was quick to snuff out his intentions.

One moment of clumsiness around the hour-mark in the box by Girona landed them in trouble with Video Assistant Referee (VAR), after a foul by Donny van de Beek on Diaz was spotted belatedly in the box.

Mohamed Salah was offered the chance to break the deadlock for The Reds from the spot and he did not disappoint, with a strike away from Gazzaniga.

Liverpool needed fresh legs in the closing stages as Cody Gakpo replaced Darwin Nunez up top and Harvey Elliot came on for Jones.

With the game on the edge, Alexander-Arnold almost sealed the three points for the visitors five minutes before time with a curling and dipping free-kick which was kept out by Gazzaniga.

In the end, the English giants held on to a narrow win, as they remained top of the standings, with six wins from six games.
