In doing so, and despite his team falling out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage, the 20-year-old became the youngest-ever recipient of the award, and only the second player from a German club to claim it, after Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski last season.
"Always happy for my achievements but they're never possible without my teammates!" Haaland shared on Twitter after being honoured.
Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe claimed second spot after netting eight times in the competition this season, while the third position was shared by seven different players, all of whom netted six times.
That group includes Chelsea's title-winning striker Olivier Giroud, whose tally included a remarkable four-goal haul during the Blues' 4-0 win over LaLiga side Sevilla in the group stage in December last year.

Notably, there was no place among the leading goalscorers for perennial contenders Lewandowski, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with the former duo having netted five times and the latter on four occasions.
