Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero for Chelsea as they claimed the UEFA Super Cup with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Villarreal in Belfast on Wednesday.
Trevor Chalobah was handed a start in the Blues' back three, having spent last season on loan at Lorient. Meanwhile, new signing Dia made his debut for the Yellow Submarine.
In the seventh minute, Hakim Ziyech's corner was met by Timo Werner with an outstretched boot at the back post, forcing Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo into a sharp reaction save.
Chelsea maintained the pressure on the Spaniards as N'Golo Kante gathered the ball 25 yards from goal and went for a long-range drive, with his effort skimming just past the left post.
Thomas Tuchel's side deservedly took the lead in the 27th minute, however. Marcos Alonso played the ball in behind the Villarreal defence down the left-hand side for Kai Havertz to run on to and the German attacker instantly delivered a pinpoint left-footed cross along the ground and into the path of Ziyech, who side-footed it past past Asenjo at his far post.
Unai Emery's side came very close to equalising with the last kick of the first half. Pino's precise cross from the right-hand side to the back post found Alberto Moreno, who struck a first-time volley sweetly but it cannoned off the crossbar and out.
Emery's side started the second half on the front foot and hit the post again five minutes after the interval when Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy slipped as he booted a goal-kick downfield. The ball fell kindly at the feet of Pino, who played Gerard Moreno through in the right-inside channel and he beat Mendy with a low strike on his left foot, only to see his effort bounce back off the right post.
El Submarino Amarillo would be justly rewarded for their dominance in the second half with the equaliser in the 73rd minute. Antonio Rudiger was sloppy in possession and the Spanish side broke quickly. Moreno fed a pass inside for the run of Dia, who got away from Andreas Christensen before returning the favour for Moreno, who lifted his effort over Mendy and into the back of the net.
The match went to extra-time with it looking a pretty even affair. In the 99th minute, Christian Pulisic poked a close-range effort wide of the post after Havertz laid it off to him but it came with pace and the American could not get it out of his feet and his first-time effort with the outside of his foot went wide.
The sides still could not be separated at 1-1 and so it went to a shootout, with Kepa Arrizabalaga having replaced Mendy for the spot-kicks. Havertz and Aissa Mandi missed theirs as it went to sudden death. Villarreal captain Raul Albiol's penalty and Villarreal's seventh was saved by his compatriot Kepa to hand Chelsea the UEFA Super Cup title.
