Messi surpasses Ronaldo, sets new UCL records

With Cristiano Ronaldo missing out on this season's UEFA Champions League, Lionel Messi set some new records in the competition on Wednesday night, one of which sees him edge past his old rival.

Paris Saint-Germain claimed a 3-1 away victory over Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday, with Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar all getting on the scoresheet together for the first time in the Champions League.

The Israeli side struck first when they took the lead in the 24th minute, but the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner equalised just 13 minutes later, converting from close range.

Mbappe and Neymar later wrapped up the victory with their second-half strikes to ensure the Parisians claimed top spot in Group H.

Messi set a series of records with his goal, with Maccabi Haifa becoming the 39th club the former FC Barcelona talisman has scored against in the tournament, moving him clear of Ronaldo, who has netted against 38 different teams.

It was also the first time the 35-year-old had converted against a club from Israel, meaning that he has now scored a goal against a club from all 19 different nations he has come up against in the UCL.

The Argentine has now also registered a goal in Europe's elite club competition for the 18th consecutive season, with his first Champions League strike coming in the 2005/06 season when he put one past Greek outfit Panathinaikos for Barca.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, will be playing no part in the UCL for the first time since his 2002/03 debut for Sporting CP, according to Marca, but he remains the showpiece's all-time leading goalscorer with 140 goals, while Messi is second in that ranking with 126 strikes to his name.
