Mokwena unhappy with Zungu progress since high-profile move

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena admitted to being unhappy with the conditioning of recent arrival Bongani Zungu.

Mokwena revealed that he remains confident that a seemingly overweight Zungu will return to his best physical condition.

The Bafana Bafana international who spent a spell in Europe appears to be making slow progress with his physical conditioning since returning to South Africa.

"The birthday boy, and an incredible human being that Bongani Zungu is," Mokwena said.

"Are we happy with his progress? He knows I am not happy.

"Maybe I can speak in a personal capacity, he knows I am not happy and knows he can do more, he knows that.

"I am not afraid to say it here because I've said it to him.

"But we continue to work, and the physical trainers are doing their best to try and assist him.

"It's not easy, because if you look at where Bongani has been over the last two seasons, it's been very difficult for him.

"Then the subject of weight loss is completely different to the subject of conditioning.

"So, it's very difficult to put a time-frame in relation to that but to lose the number of kilos that has lost is a reflection of good work both himself and the conditioning team have done.

"But he remains committed to the process. I am sure we are still going see more from Bongs, he will continue to work hard.

"He is a top professional, and that's what got him to Europe."

Sundowns next face an away second leg tie in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on 14 October.

Kick-off is at 18:00.
