Manchester City suffered their first defeat in the Premier League this season after going down 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday evening.
Mohamed Salah, who scored a hat-trick for Liverpool against Rangers in midweek from the bench was recalled whilst City featured Erling Haaland after he was an unused substitute against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday.
It was a lively start from the champions in the opening 15 minutes and very nearly pounced from a quick break-attack to Haaland, but the Reds cleared their lines effectively in the end.
Liverpool came alive six minutes later after a ball from the left area by Harvey Elliott allocated Diogo Jota to get an effort in, but City goalkeeper Ederso parried the forward.
Nonetheless, the title holders enjoyed the final moments before halftime as Kevin De Bruyne raced to the last third and picked out Haaland from the back-post but Ederson smothered.
Liverpool's confidence was renewed five minutes after halftime and nearly had the lead when Salah ran through following a through pass and forced a finger-tip save from Ederson.
The Citizens looked to have gone ahead minutes thereafter when Phil Foden finished off a loose ball from a tight angle, but after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, it was chalked off as Haaland had fouled Fabinho in the build-up.
In a tense but lively encounter, the Reds at the other end burst through the defence and watched Elliott head a floating ball from the far side onto the woodwork and over target.
Liverpool though broke the deadlock in the remaining 15 minutes after a long ball from Alisson Becker fell straight to Salah who turned Joao Cancelo to go clear and finished with ease.
The Citizens brought on Julian Alvarez with two minutes to go and looked to snatch a point, but it wasn't to be as the Reds claimed the win.
