Liverpool's Nunez among 6 Ballon d'Or finalists to get 0 votes

While Karim Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d'Or on Monday night, six of the 30 finalists for the award received zero votes, including Liverpool star Darwin Nunez.

Benzema walked away with the ultimate prize on the night, beating Sadio Mane and Kevin De Bruyne, who finished in second and third place, respectively, to the prestigious accolade.

Kylian Mbappe also found himself in the top 10 after a high-scoring season with Paris Saint-Germain, while Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah completed the top five.

Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, fell to his lowest finish since he last came 20th in 2005, and seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi did not make the 30-man final nominees list following an underwhelming first season with Paris Saint-Germain.

According to the Daily Mail, however, there were six finalists who did not receive a single vote, with one of them being new Reds striker Nunez.

The Uruguayan enjoyed a successful 2021/22 season with Benfica, helping them to third place in the Primeira Liga with 26 goals in 28 league matches while impressing in the UEFA Champions League too, but this was seemingly not enough to earn him a single vote at the final count.

New Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rudiger is another who did not get any votes after losing two domestic cup finals in the 2021/22 campaign with Chelsea, and the same can be said of Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich.

Interestingly, although RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku beat Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski to the 2021/22 Bundesliga Player of the Season award, he also did not receive a vote in the final Ballon d'Or ranking, with AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan and Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo also suffering the same fate.
