Man Utd 'close in' on ex-LFC transfer guru who signed Mane & Salah

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a former Liverpool transfer guru who signed the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for the Reds.

Michael Edwards left the Merseyside club at the end of the 2021/22 campaign after 10 years, having made the switch to Liverpool from Tottenham Hotspur as a performance analyst in 2011.

During his time at Anfield, he was promoted to the role of sporting director, helped Jurgen Klopp and company win the 2019/20 Premier League title and the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League trophy, among other silverware, and played a big role in transfer negotiations for transformative Reds signings such as Mane, Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho.

Since his departure from Liverpool in June, the transfer expert has been linked with a number of top European sides, including Chelsea and United.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the Blues approached Edwards in August, but the Englishman turned down the opportunity to work at Stamford Bridge.

He was said to have told the London club's hierarchy that he wants to take some time away from football before returning to the game.

Now, per Football Insider, United have jumped ahead in the race to secure his services and are close to agreeing a deal with the 43-year-old.

It is further claimed that the Manchester club is willing to wait until the end of this season for him to join them.

United's chiefs reportedly believe Edwards is the right man to oversee their future transfer business after the Red Devils spent more than £1 billion (R20 billion) since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
