Breakout Pirates star Saleng reveals how he nearly joined rivals Kaizer Chiefs

Orlando Pirates attacker Monnapule Saleng has revealed how he nearly joined Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs who were at a stage in pole position to clinch his signature.

With five goals in eight appearances under his belt this season, Saleng has been a revelation for the Buccaneers.

The 24-year-old inspired the Sea Robbers to a memorable run in the MTN8 and topped-off his contribution with a stunning free-kick to help the Buccaneers beat AmaZulu in the cup final.

Saleng's efforts have earned a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for two upcoming friendlies against Mozambique and Angola.

In a recent interview with SAFA Media's Romy Titus, the winger revealed how he was on the Amakhosi radar before the Buccaneers snapped him up.

"I was supposed to play for Chiefs because there was a scout from Chiefs that was monitoring me when I was at Free State Stars," Saleng explained.

"So I don't know what happened. I think that's just football because here I am playing for the Pirates. I was supposed to be at Chiefs that time I was a Free State Stars but they delayed, I don't know what happened and I ended up playing for Pirates."

The tricky wing-wizard was voted by fans as the Man of the Match during the Buccaneers' win over Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black Label Cup on Saturday and all eyes will be on him when Bafana Bafana takes on Mozambique on Thursday.
