A Premier League striker who was linked with a move to Manchester United has been accused of breaching 232 betting rules.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney was earmarked as one of the players who could get a call-up to Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
However, a week prior to the announcement of the squad, the Daily Mail reported that the forward was the subject of an ongoing FA investigation over alleged gambling offences for seven months.
The Mail also says the investigation relates to betting activity before he played for Brentford, and there are no suggestions he ever gambled against his own team.

Toney then confirmed that he was helping the English FA in their investigation
The FA have now confirmed that the player has officially been charged.
"Ivan Toney has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA's betting rules,' the FA said in a statement on Wednesday.
"It is alleged that the Brentford FC forward breached FA rule E8 232 times between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021.
"Ivan Toney has until Thursday, November 24 to provide a response."

Brentford has also released a response to the decision made regarding Toney,
"Brentford FC has been informed that Ivan Toney has been charged with breaches of FA Rule E8.
"The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives about this matter and those conversations will continue privately.
"We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed."
Toney was widely linked with a move to United in the most recent transfer window and recent reports suggested that the EPL frontman was still viewed by the Manchester club as Cristiano Ronaldo's replacement.
