With reigning African Footballer of the Year Sadio Mane ruled of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has revealed the role the Bayern Munich star now plays behind the scenes for the national team.
Mane's tournament came to an abrupt end before it even began as he was ruled out of the competition due to a tendon injury he sustained during Bayern Munich's second-last match before the World Cup kicked off.

Given his stature in the national team, it was a huge blow for the west African side, who went on to lose their opening Group A fixtures against 2010 World Cup runners-up Netherlands on Monday.
Speaking ahead of Senegal's clash against hosts Qatar on Friday, skipper Koulibaly revealed that the former Liverpool star still plays a key role in the squad at the tournament and is in constant dialogue with the team.
"He's always texting with us, always calling," the ex-Napoli star said, according to Spanish outlet SPORT.
"[He is] keeping the mentality high for the team. He's an important player for us. We know the importance that he has for the team and we hope he will continue [to stay in touch]. When he speaks, all of Senegal listens."
With goalkeeper Edouard Mendy having faced criticism for his performance in the Lions of Teranga's 2-0 defeat to the Dutch, Koulibaly insisted he is not concerned about the backlash and is only focused on supporting his club teammate and compatriot.
"We're brothers in arms," the 31-year-old added.
"He's an important player for us. It's normal to go through difficult periods, but I think we're making a mountain out of a molehill.
Edouard knows what he needs to do, as do we.
"I don't think we should be making a big deal about this. Everyone needs to be confident in our role; everyone needs to get stuck in. It is together that we are going to be able to overcome this hurdle. I am not worried."
