Germany rescue a point against Spain

Germany remain without a win at the 2022 FIFA World Cup  after drawing 1-1 with Spain on Sunday evening.

After the shock defeat to Japan, there were two changes for Germany in Thilo Kehrer and Leon Goretzka whilst La Roja re-called full-back Dani Carvajal as their single alteration.

Spain controlled the opening five minutes and very nearly found the breakthrough when Manuel Neuer palmed a scorching strike from Dani Olmo onto the woodwork.

However, a fast-pace move involving Goretzka allowed Die Mannschaft to charge forward on the break and play Serge Gnabry in-behind but the forward failed to pounce.

The possession-based tempo from La Roja caused uncertainty amongst Die Mannschaft, but the very structure had Gnabry in from a stray pass before he curled wide from a tight angle.

Germany showed a lot of purpose before halftime and had the ball in the net through Antonio Rudiger's header following Joshua Kimmich's in-swinging free-kick, but it was ruled out for offside.

La Roja brought in a substitution ten minutes into the second half where Ferran Torres was called to make way for Juventus forward Alvaro Morata.

This substitution paid dividends for Spain on 62 minutes after Morata made a perfectly timed run in the area and applied a first-time finish from a cross by Jordi Alba to hand his side the lead.

Alba was involved in another move four minutes apart when he played a square pass to Gavi which rolled over to Marco Asensio, who took hold and dragged wide of the mark.

Germany rescued a point with seven minutes to play as substitute Niclas Fullkrug bombed into the area and fired in from the foot of Jamal Musiala.

Die Mannschaft searched for the winner in the dying stages, but La Roja held out and claimed a draw in the end.
