'The whole of Ghana and Africa hates Suarez'

One of the Ayew brothers has insisted that the whole of Ghana and Africa "hates" Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, and that the Black Stars "want revenge" when the two nations meet in their crucial 2022 FIFA World Cup match on Friday.

When it was confirmed that Ghana would line up alongside Uruguay in Group H back in April, memories of their infamous last meeting at the tournament were evoked.

When the two sides met at Soccer City in Johannesburg at the 2010 World Cup, the match ended in controversial fashion as Ghana were knocked out of the competition via a penalty shootout to deny them their first-ever spot in the semi-finals.

While the result certainly broke the hearts of many in the country, it was the manner in which they lost that left a devastating impact as they came agonisingly close to winning the match in extra-time after Suarez deliberately handled the ball on the goal-line to keep out a goal-bound header by Dominic Adiyiah.

With the former Liverpool striker being sent off, Asamoah Gyan was tasked with taking the crucial spot-kick to make the Black Stars the first African team to reach the last four of the competition, but his effort hit the bar and went over, and Ghana went on to lose the shootout that followed.

Defender Ibrahim Ayew, who was part of the Black Stars squad on that fateful day, has now revealed that he still harbours bad feelings toward Suarez.

"I thought we had won," the Gibraltar-based star told The Athletic about the incident.

"I was a substitute, warming up behind that goal, and I ran on to the pitch to celebrate because I was sure the ball had crossed the line.

"I thought we had done it, the first African team ever to reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

"... The whole of Ghana hates him [Luis Suarez], and the whole of Africa hates him.

"Oh yes, we hate him. And we want revenge."
